Moses Lake, WA

If you read my last post (thank you Brenda, Mimi, Mrs E, Robin...all my faithful followers!), you know that we went on a business trip yesterday for Will's job.  On our way home from Moses Lake, WA we drove through some beautiful scenery.  The trip back started out like this:

Columbia River - Moses Lake has lots of
hydro-power from this lake/dam.

And...lots of wind power.
And once we hit the Cascade Mountains, it turned into this:

Doesn't the forest look enchanting?!
It was a very pretty route (especially since I wasn't the one driving in the snow).  Once we got back to Seattle it was sunny and 50 degrees.  The whole way through the Cascades Will is saying 'Can we please get a Subaru? Or anything with 4WD.'  He may be right about this --- we will probably need one!

**Warning - I will not be posting for a while because I'll be in South Africa on vacation!!! But don't fret, the blog post upon my return will be well worth the wait :)

Pho Real!

Have you ever had Pho (pronounced more like fuh)?  It's delicious, especially on a cool and rainy day.  We happened to have one of those days this weekend when our friends from Dallas were in town visiting.

My veggie & tofu Pho.

Rich and his beef Pho.
We also went to dinner with Rich and Matthew at Ray's Cafe.
Delicious seafood and we got the flourless chocolate cake :)
Yesterday we drove through the Cascades to Moses Lake, WA for a quick business trip for Will's job.  I tagged along for the ride, since I could, and am enjoying all the luxuries the Holiday Inn Express has to offer -- namely a bed, a tv and a gym.  I'm doing just fine!!
Photos of the drive through the Cascades. It looked
like it had just snowed before we got there.

OH Yeah... Gettin' Creative

Today on my home from a nice walk at the lake (I'm only 'allowed' to run every other day to avoid injury.  That's why I was walking.) I picked up some gorgeous yellow and red leaves.  I created a simple and free (!) decoration for our mantle.

The apples will slowly disappear
as I pack them in Will's lunch!

And that, folks, is what you get when you have time, a dash of creativity and zero dollars.  You could add a nice big candle as a centerpiece and then smaller votives to fill in the space (in my case, I am living out of a suitcase so I literally have nothing).

Random Wednesday

Hope this makes you laugh just a little. Have a nice Wednesday!

Oh, and...HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBIN!

A Weekend of Fall Foliage

Fall Foliage: Part I
We are taking advantage of the sunny days we've had since we moved to Seattle (I am hoping that everyone made up the rainy stories about this city so they could keep it to themselves!... We will see if that's true or not).  This weekend was absolutely gorgeous outside and has really offered some lovely fall colors.  Saturday morning we took our coffee and went on a walk around Greenlake.  While on our walk, we saw a regatta, lots of people out walking, lots of strollers and lots of dogs!

Not sure what kind of berries these
are but I thought they looked interesting.

Three sweet little ducks sleeping in the water.

The Regatta we watched.

One of the many dogs we saw -- such a cute Sheepdog!

Fall Foliage: Part II
Being the crafty person that I am, haha, and having been inspired by all the lovely leaves, I decided to make an arrangement out of leaves and such from our yard.  Some of the bushes needed trimming anyways, so I took the liberty of doing so :)

To create a natural looking arrangement, you need to start by selecting a few varieties of branches, flowers, etc from your yard.  You really can't go wrong, so just cut whatever looks best to you.

Step 1: Select the larger pieces for the back and work around them.  Once you decide how tall they will be, you measure the rest of the pieces off of them, always making the other pieces a bit shorter.
I was able to find some Ivy, Magnolia and Holly-ish plants to use.

I started with the Holly-ish looking plant first;
making it the backdrop for the rest of my arrangement.
Step 2: Start placing the other major focal points in the front.
Step 3: Fill in the rest of the pieces as you wish, now that you have your backdrop and your main plants in place. I added pieces of shorter Magnolia and then taller pieces of Ivy to the back.
You are done! Lovely and free arrangement.
Fall Foliage: Part III
Today we went to Issaquah to hike to Poo Poo Point.  No, I didn't make that up. And guess who chose the hike...yes, Will.  Supposedly, it's called that because a train used to go by that point on the mountain and the whistle made the poo poo sound when it let out steam.

Well, we didn't hike to Poo Poo Point today (I'm sure we will soon).  Fortunately, we met an experienced couple in the parking lot at the trail head who knew what they were doing, and where they were going, (unlike us) that invited us to tag along with them on their hike up West Tiger Mountain #3, Section Line Trail.  We decided that was a lovely idea and we would have some company on our hike so we took off up the mountain with Amy and Kal.  How do I put this delicately...we assumed we would have no problem keeping up with them since they are in their 60's.  WRONG.

Amy hopped up the 2,522 foot high mountain (which is really steep for people coming from where a speed-bump is considered elevation) like it was nothing and had Kal, Will and me trailing up behind her the whole way.  She kind of reminded me of mom, very spry and a very fast little walker!  They were expert guides and told us lots of things about the outdoors, places to visit, equipment to buy, outdoor clubs to join and so on and so forth.  Kal was extremely informative and taught us things during the whole hike, which I think we were both grateful for on many levels (firstly, the knowledge, and secondly, we didn't have the energy to talk!) while Amy was the fearless leader, guiding us up and down the mountain.  We had a great time, got a great workout and feel fortunate to have met them as they were so interesting.  I hope I am in at least half of the shape they are in when I am their age, it really is inspiring.

There were so many different types of mushrooms on this hike.
This one looks like coral and I saw a bunch that looked like eggs.

At the top.  You could see for miles.

In the distance you can see downtown Seattle, the Cascades,
the Puget Sound, Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish.

Kal feeding birds out of his hand at the top of the mountain.

Will acting like Kal.  I fed one bird but screamed when
it touched me because I didn't expect them to have sharp nails!
As an aside, Will has been sleeping like a baby (on an air mattress) since we got home from the hike!

Thanksgiving Tablescapes

Even though we won't be in the US for Thanksgiving, I love planning a festive tablescape.  If you are hosting this holiday, or maybe just looking for ideas for the year when it's 'your turn', hopefully these will inspire you.  They are certainly inspiring for me.
I had to put this one...hello...it says 'Melanie'.

I love this one, it's simple but elegant.

One of my favorites; I love the use of the white
and pastel colored mini pumpkins.

Cute idea for name-holders.

A modern version of Thanksgiving.

An example of what not to do. From our first Thanksgiving in
Dallas. No furniture yet, no company, no cooking. Perfect!

Thanksgiving 2009.
I was the hostess and used simple table settings, white
monogrammed linens, china and silver,
and pumpkin candles.

I was in charge of the table decor and
had to use what I found in the yard.
Wherever your Thanksgiving is, whether it is in the US or South Africa (like us!!), have a happy one!

Snowshoeing

Did I make that word up? Nope, I thought I did but then I checked my good 'ole friend dictionary.com and it's an actual word!  We are taking up snowshoeing this winter and went to REI for a free class last night -Intro to Snowshoeing.  It was very informative and they went over all the equipment you would need and gave us some good recommendations on places to go.  Supposedly there is a really long snowshoeing season here, depending on which mountains you go to, but apparently you can snowshoe from November through May, maybe even June or July.

I'm hoping to find some nice pink snowshoes and will have to find a matching ensemble of course :)
REI HQ in Seattle - we have been there about four times already.

Something like this would do me nicely, maybe a tad more
pink though. I could always do a purple snowshoe
if I had a purple outfit.
